From Bermondsey, London to Morzine in France!?

The tale that I am going to tell you is a curious one at the most and it is a story that stretches almost 480 miles! Bec Juane (Yellow Beak), which is run by Chrigl Luthy/ Matthew Stone, originated in London at The Kernel Brewery on the Bermondsey Beer Mile, when Chrigl, who is the head brewer “made the decision to bring better beer to the mountains.”Now the brewery serves fresh beer brewed in small scale batches, accompanied by a great menu which includes vegetarian and vegan options, using fresh ingredients, sourced mainly from local producers. As weird as it sounds, we happened to be in the area for a spot of mountain biking… which is always followed by a cold one of course! So we had to take a peek as we had heard so many great things…

To be honest, the place doesn’t look like much from the outside, it’s on the ground floor of a chalet and other than the bavarian-style benches and the sign outside, there was not really much ambience of the brewery, but like all great things, the magic always happens within and this was what we got! A rustic shabby chic style decor, board games on the side and lots of wood… we love wood! 🙂 To the right stood the large gleaming brewing vessels, probably less than 10 ft from the bar, so we knew that this stuff was going to be uber fresh!

Beer-wise, there were three taps on… We tried the Saison, which was spot on. Pretty zesty, not too overpowering, very easy and refreshing to drink. We then tried the IPA, which was the real winner for us, quite malty, with a fresh hoppy feel… So we got a pitcher!

The range of food was simple, but sooo good! Whether you’re a carnivorous beast, vegetarian or vegan there is something for everyone with a range of burgers, salads and tacos. We went for a nice little combo of their BBQ Pulled Aubergine Burger (which was SERIOUSLY good) and is to this day, probably the best burger I have EVER tasted. Some spicy crispy Tofu, with Dip and a Fried Little Gem Lettuce!

This accompanied by some great company, atmosphere and customer service was sheer perfection. So if you’re ever in the French Alps, you need to go out of your way to check this place out, cause we thought that it was REALLY EPIC!

Bec Juane opens from 16:00 – 23:30 every day over the winter and summer season (please call for off season opening times).
