This time though we’re not talking gunpowder but BEER!


Hackney Brewery – Kapow! 4.5% abv

This brew was canned the morning before we tried it, so it was uber fresh!

Appearance: Light amber with a slight haze.

Aroma: Very hoppy, with a pineapple breeze and blast of tropical fruit.

Flavour: A splash of grapefruit and other tropical fruit, finished off with a fresh hit of pine.

Sweet, juicy and easy to drink, with a contrasting bitterness that works perfectly together.

Oakham Ales – Inferno 4.4% abv

Winner of an epic five awards including the 2010 Gold Champion CAMRA Beer of East Anglia.

Appearance: Clear, light amber with a fair few bubbles on the side of the glass and a light, frothy head.

Aroma: An explosion of bitter hoppiness followed by a slight hint of floral honeysuckle and dry pine finish.

Flavour: A cracking combination of sweet fruitiness, counterbalanced by a bitter, hoppy finish.

Well balanced and thirst-quenchingly good!

Fownes Brewing Co. – Visions of Heresy 5.7% abv

“Smoke clears. Rye appears. Descends into hoppy madness.”

Appearance: Hazy orange with a slight off-white moderate head and a fair few bubbles.

Aroma: Sweet smoky rye, with a nice hint of spice and a slightly herbal feel.

Flavour: Sweet rich berry fruit and warming at the same time, creating a slightly sherry-like combination, with a bitter smoky finish.

Very smoky, but there’s no smoke without fire and this one warms the belly!

Harveys Brewery – Bonfire Boy 5.8% abv

This brew has now become one of the most eagerly awaited seasonal beers that Harveys produce! The bonfire celebrations in Lewes are known as the biggest traditional celebrations in the world!

Appearance: Hazy chestnut brown, with a minimal off-white head that reduces quickly and reminices on the surface.

Aroma: Sweet and malty with a bold hit of berries to create a sherry-like fruitiness with a hint of smoke and butterscotch sweetness.

Flavour: Rich burnt toffee with a warming fruitiness and a great mix of smoky bitterness/ liquorice.

This one’s a real firecracker!

Lacons Brewery – Affinity 4.8% abv

Winner of five beer awards including the World Beer Awards 2016!

Appearance: Golden and quite carbonated with a minimal head bubbling away.

Aroma: Citrusy with delicate floral notes and a hint of green apple.

Flavour: Quite floral, with a lemon bitter buzz in the finish.

A cracking combination of sweet floral and bitterness that creates a well balanced smooth brew.

RedWillow Brewery – Smokeless Smoked Chipotle Porter 5.7% abv

Infused with Chipotles, this brew has won two Gold CAMRA awards, a SIBA Gold and Bronze medal too!

Appearance: Jet black, with a brownish tinge and head that is thick but quickly reduces.

Aroma: A sweet mix of coffee and chocolate with a hint of spice.

Flavour: A cracking mix of chocolate and coffee, infused with a dash of smoke and a slightly spicy kick in the finish that begs you to take another sip!

Very, very warming and the perfect brew as the colder nights draw in!
