The Epic Huber Brau in Austria

Huber Brau, an Austrian Brewery

We went to visit the Huber Brau, an Austrian Brewery set in St Johann, Tirol by the Wilder Kaiser Mountains. Huber’s idyllic setting is the perfect location for brewing some authentically fresh beer. The brewery is in a tower that overshadows the vast majority of its surroundings, so much that you could even imagine Dracula, (although we were in the wrong part of Europe), brewing his beer up here!

When you walked into the brewery, which is at the bottom of the tower, the copper tanks gleam as if you have just walked onto the set of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Gene Wilder is waiting around the corner with some beery treats

We then ventured up the long and winding staircase which led up to the restaurant at the top of this great beer tower. At the top it was heaving so much that we couldn’t sit down and were forced onto the balcony, which was a great testament to how amazing the food and beer was. We didn’t mind though, with such extravagant scenery. Admiring the beautiful view from the top, we tried what we came for and it didn’t disappoint!

The Huber Original is a crisp, refreshing Pilsner style brew. Something that anyone can enjoy.

The second was something a bit more special… Tirolian Weisbier, brewed with the Bavarian flower which grows above the 500 feet mark on the side of the surrounding mountains. The SS Soldiers in World War 2 used to trek up and put it in their uniforms as a symbol of honour. The cloudy orange glow and combination of smoke and fresh cut grass leads you into a fresh tasting brew with a fantastic balance of floral, smoke and spice… really smooth.

So if you’re ever near St.Johann in Tirol, this is a MUST SEE, but if you want to eat or sit for that matter, you need to get in early!
