The day had finally come, it was pouring with rain but nothing was going to stop us heading out for our annual Biking for Beers event in celebration of Birmingham Beer Week. For this year’s event we headed to four venues starting at can eat, where we were welcomed with an epic brekkie despite being soaking wet. With our stomachs full, we got ready to set off but not before a short toast to our voyage with Zwillinge, the official collab beer of Birmingham Beer Week.
First stop was DigBrew a brewery that we stopped at last year and we just had to revisit those epic towering tanks. We sat down with Graphic Designer Jack, who told us the story behind their epic can artwork, while trialling the brews too!
We then took the off road canal route to Burning Soul where there was only one brew that we could go for… their legendary Ice Cream Pale! After getting our fix, we admired their epic Thirsty Games trophy from Indie Man in 2017. Co-Founder Rich told us about the win that put them in the spotlight two years ago.
With the weather finally starting to ease up, we continued along the canal, followed by Harborne Walkway, an old disused railway that has now been turned into a fantastic walking and cycling route. After quickly fixing a flat tyre we finally reached our next stop the Hop Garden in Harborne, which has a fantastic range of both cask and keg. Local beer legend Ross Lang joined us to talk about the difference between cask and keg.
With the rain at a standstill, we headed back onto the canal for our final(ish) stop, Birmingham Brewing Company. With a handful of Pale Brummies, Head Brewer, Matt Buist walked us through the brewing process.
With the ride ‘officially’ over, we had a final unofficial stop to check out… Glasshouse Beer Co. Their tap had just opened 2 days prior and it was awesome! It’s taken a while for them to get it up and running but it was well and truly worth the wait! Beside the canal, it’s in a perfect location for cyclists passing by. After enjoying their epic Deep Seeded_RB it was time for us to wrap up for the day.
The weather might not have been great but we had an awesome day. Respect to everyone that braved it, all the breweries involved and for everyone that donated prizes for the charity raffle. We’ll be running some more of these very soon, so we hope to see you then! 🙂
