IPA DAY: 1st August
To celebrate the day itself, Goose Island Brewpub will be hosting an IPA tap takeover with a fantastic range of IPA’s from their own brewery, as well as a few choice guests.
International Beer Day: 2nd August
And the good news just keeps on coming as Goose Island Brewpub will next be offering you the chance to win a brew day with Head Brewer, Andrew Walton. Any pint you buy, they’ll drop your name into a hat and pick out a random winner at the end of the day. The more pints you buy, the better the chance you have at winning!
We had a chance to catch up with Andrew to find out more about these fantastic events while enjoying his current favourite, Fog Bowl IPA.
“So we dabble with a few different varieties of IPA here. Obviously, we have the Goose IPA, an American take on the classic English IPA, which, in my opinion, is quite delicious. For the IPA tap takeover we’re doing a couple of different varieties. We’ve got the Restrictor Plate, which is our sort of West Coast IPA, with Citra and Mosaic with hop charges every 10 minutes at the boil, then a whirlpool and then with an even longer dry hop at the end. There’s a lot of hops in it but I think it’s really well-balanced. [There’s also] the juiciness from the hop character, so you get all of those really lovely mango, citrusy sort of flavours, with an appropriate bitterness.”
“We’ve also got the hazy IPA, Fog Bowl. We’ve been doing this with different hop rotations; this one is Amarillo, Citra and Simcoe, so it’s a little thicker and a little less bitter, with tropical aromas that you’d expect and a juicy stone-fruit character. At the lower end, we’ve brewed Little IPA so this is a 3.9%, perfectly sessionable beer but still with a whole load of hops in it. We’re trying to cater for all tastes and different types of beers.”
On talking about the cracking brew day competition, Andrew seems genuinely excited and more than willing to share his brewing knowledge, “So we’ve mostly done collaborations with other breweries, but we’ve also done things with artists. So we’ve had folks that don’t have a lot of experience in brewing, and it’s nice to have [them] over and hang with us for the day and see how we’re doing things. So yea man, I’m really looking forward to it.”
“For the tasting event at the end of the month, we will have Restrictor Plate on, Fog Bowl, Little IPA has been quite popular so it may not be available, but definitely Goose IPA. Midway Session IPA and we also have a sessionable hazy IPA in tank right now, which should be ready. So if you love your hops, you’ll definitely get your fill, for sure!”
There you have it, guys, head down to Goose Island’s Brewpub in Shoreditch and join in with the festivities!
