So that epic weekend is upon us! This is where the madness begins, campers clog up the motorways and everyone makes haste for a supposedly relaxing weekend! Whatever you’re doing this bank holiday, you need to have an EPIC line-up for the weekend and we’ve got it right here!


Velvet Owl Brewing Co. – Old Sport, (Orange Vermont Pale Ale 4.5%)

We had the honour of checking out Velvet Owl’s brewery earlier this month and WOW, what a cracking place, it’s pretty big too! This is their flagship brew:

Appearance: Hazy, tawny-amber, with a slight head that reduces, leaving a nice bit of lacing on the side of the glass.

Aroma: Sweet citrus, with a touch of tangerine, tropical grapefruit, sweet toffee and vanilla.

Flavour: Sweet pine, followed by a dash of marmalade and a slightly bitter, hoppy finish.

A fantastic bitter-sweet mix, bursting with flavour!

Schoppe Bräu – Juice (New England IPA, 6%)

Schoppe Bräu is a small artisanal brewery based in the heart of Germany’s industrial and cultural capital, Berlin. Set up by Thorsten Schoppe back in 2001, they use a mix of different brewing methods to produce traditional beers, alongside unusual creations that excite! Using the motto “Hops, malt and elbow grease”, Schoppe now brews over 15 different varieties of beer, all unfiltered!

Appearance: Light amber, with a slight haze and a moderate head.

Aroma: Sweet green apple, with a touch of honey and peach.

Flavour: The sweet apple is carried through into the flavour. It’s met with a citrusy tang and polished off with a bitter, hoppy finish.

A fair bit of fizz creating an almost “brut-like” beer, that is sharp, crisp and refreshing.

DE14 – Flight Suit Orange Pale Ale (Pale Ale, 5.1%)

Nicknamed “The Brewers Playground”, DE14 is the Burton-on-Trent based nano-brewery where the crazy stuff goes on. They let their brewers have complete freedom on this small batch kit which produces 600 pints per brew and has so far brewed over 50 unique beers.

Appearance: Clear, pale amber, bubbling away, with a thick head that reduces to lacing on the surface.

Aroma:  Sweet marmalade, with a touch of pineapple, citrusy lemon and pine in the background.

Flavour: Citrusy orange, with a dash of sweet shandy-like lime, hit of biscuity caramel and a bitter grapefruit finish.

Very crisp and refreshing, perfect for kicking back on the beach.

St. Austell Brewery – Korev (Lager, 4.8%)

From Cornwall, “Korev” meaning “beer” in Cornish, is St. Austell’s signature lager.

Appearance: Pale golden, with plenty of bubbles feeding a moderate head.

Aroma: Slightly herbal, with a sweet malty underlay and touch of green apple.

Flavour: A bitter hoppiness that works perfectly with the mellow malty sweetness to create a well balanced clean brew that tingles on your tongue.

Fresh, clean cut and perfect for barbecues!

Purity Brewing Co. – Session IPA, (IPA 4.5%)

Named simply as ‘Session IPA’, this limited release (200 kegs and 200 cases of cans) is gluten free, vegan friendly and infused with real grapefruit peel. It’s the first brew to be released that’s been trialled on Purity’s new pilot kit. The exterior boasts some cracking artwork, designed by two talented final year students from Birmingham School of Art.

Appearance: Hazy light amber, with a decent head that fizzes away slowly and reduces to lacing.

Aroma: A burst of grapefruit and pineapple, complemented by a touch of caramel, fresh pine and an underlay of nostalgic candied mint.

Flavour: A tropical fiesta of grapefruit and sweet pineapple that works perfectly with the slightly dry, bitter hoppy finish.

Really juicy and mega refreshing, especially for this time of year!

Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat – Vedett Session IPA (IPA, 2.7%)

Just launched in the UK, this brew sees Vedett delve into the low abv world at a modest 2.7%… promising to keep 97.3% taste!

Appearance: Golden straw, with a slight haze, a fair few bubbles and a white sparse head that slowly reduces.

Aroma: Citrusy, with a slightly farmhouse feel, dash of straw and a fresh pine underlay.

Flavour: Thirst quenching citrus, with a touch of lemon cheesecake and a slightly sour, bitter, hoppy finish.

Mega refreshing and still heaps of flavour for 2.7%!

Shipyard – American Pale Ale (APA, 4.5%)

Founded in Portland, Maine, Shipyard Brewing Company is an award-winning family owned brewery who have been brewing hand-crafted beers since 1994 under the watchful eye of world-renowned Master Brewer, Alan Pugsley. Shipyard have three permanent beers available across the UK.

Appearance: Pale Amber, with a thick white frothy head that disappears quickly.

Aroma: Notes of lemon and grapefruit, treacle, with a light orange, zesty maltiness.

Flavour: A malty sweetness, with a touch of tangerine and a pine, bitter, hoppy finish.

Schoppe Bräu – No Juice (Alcohol-Free Pale Ale, <0.5%)

Well you’ve seen the “Juice”, now it’s time to check out Schoppe Bräu’s “No Juice”, alcohol free pale ale.

Appearance: Glowing, hazy amber, with a dense thick white fluffy head.

Aroma: Exceptionally sweet and malty, with a touch of straw and herbal hoppiness.

Flavour: Sweet wheat, complemented by a touch of burnt malt and a bitter, hoppy finish.

For an alcohol free brew this one is a real cracker and full of flavour.
