Top Summer Brews!

So Summer is here… in a mixed bag kind of way, with blasts of heat followed by torrential downpours! But no matter what the weather is saying, we need to keep up with the British spirit, with shorts on even though it’s 15 degrees outside, sunbathing even though it’s overcast and of course having those Summer brews at the ready. So we’ve put together eleven truly EPIC brews to enjoy what we call the Great British Summer!


Marston’s – 61 Deep Pale Ale 4.1% abv

Named after the well at the brewery that is 61 metres deep, this brew uses five American and Australian hops.

Appearance: Golden, with a moderate, white head that quickly disperses. Very carbonated with bubbles rising as if there is a diver down the bottom of the pint!

Aroma: Sweet, hoppy aroma, with notes of pine, honey and a hint of citrus fruit.

Flavour: These citrusy notes are carried through into the flavour to create a zesty tang, followed by a hint of bitter hoppiness which is matched by a slight sweetness.

Appearance: Deep, clear amber with little carbonation leaving a little lacing on the surface.

Aroma: Citrusy, with hint of vanilla and sweet apple dipped in honey.

Flavour: A cracking combination of sweet melon and honey, finished off with bitter grapefruit and zesty orange peel.

Very interesting, definitely one for the summer with a lot more character then your average pale ale.

Autumn Brewing Co – Alt Brew No.2 4.6% abv

Brewed with the finest naturally gluten-free Californian rice malts, which is cool. Suitable for Coeliacs and anyone who has an allergy to wheat, barley or rye, many of whom can’t drink the de-glutenised gluten-free beers.

Appearance: Clear golden, with a thin white head, slightly carbonated.

Aroma: You can smell the quinoa/ rice grains, quite sweet with a hint of pine grain and slight fruitiness.

Flavour: A cracking bitter-sweet mix of sweet citrus counteracted by a bitter pine finish.

Definitely a unique beer with some great character, especially for a gluten free brew.

Pirate Life Brewing – Throwback IPA 3.5% abv

These guys from Adelaide, Australia just keep on shipping over some amazing brews and they use a refrigerated supply chain to ensure that their beers stay Ozzie Fresh too!

Appearance: Cloudy amber, slightly carbonated with a moderate white head that disperses slowly.

Aroma: Very tropical, with a hint of grapefruit and passionfruit.

Flavour: Sweet tropical fruit, with a slight maltiness, finished off with a nice bitter grapefruit bite.

Very easy and at 3.5 % is the perfect session brew.

Appearance: Light, cloudy amber with a thick white frothy head.

Aroma: Sweet and citrusy, with a very fresh hoppy finish.

Flavour: Light and refreshing, with a slight malty sweetness, ended with a dry bitter finish.

A cracking taste that reminisces in your mouth and makes you want to indulge even more.

Appearance: Light, golden straw, pretty carbonated, with a thick head that reduces quickly leaving a fair bit of lacing.

Aroma: Lemon, citrusy with a hint of biscuity maltiness.

Flavour: Sweet, with a hint of melon and honey followed by a crisp, bitter finish.

Very refreshing and nice and light for those hot summer days!

Appearance: Amber, slightly carbonated, with an off-white head that reduces.

Aroma: Citrusy, with hints of fresh summer fruits, followed by a bold blast of strawberry and lime. Very floral with a slight hint of pine in the background.

Flavour: Quite light, with a mellow essence of the strawberries and citrus, finished off with a slight bitter, hoppy finish.

Very refreshing, perfect for that summer picnic in the park!

Little Creatures – Pale Ale 5.2% abv

From Australia, this beer was originally brewed “to startle the tastebuds of Aussie beer-drinkers and create a merry gang of flavour hounds.” Now it’s reached our shores and is becoming ever more popular by the day!

Aroma: Sweet, zesty, with a hint of mango and pine.

Flavour: Very citrusy, with a burst of mango, finished off with a fresh hit of bitter orange peel.

Nirvana Brewery – Tantra Pale Ale 0.0% abv

This is from the UK’s only alcohol free brewery and London’s so called 100th brewery. Also based on that epic bohemian stretch by the River Lea, surrounded by some great breweries, bars and pubs!

Appearance: Deep, clear amber, with a minimal head.

Aroma: Sweet and citrusy, with a potent hit of malted grains.

Flavour: A dash of orange peel, followed by a light malty sweetness in the background with a hint of spice and a slight bitter dry finish.

Definitely a unique find for a 0% brew, beats any other low/ non-alcoholic brews, matching the intensity of higher abv brews.

Lost Rivers Brewing Co – Walbrook Pale Ale 4.5% abv

Another brew  from Lost Rivers Brewing Co, located just a stone’s throw away from the Lost Rivers such as the Bermondsey Yard Cafe.

Appearance: Slightly clouded light amber, with a moderate head that reduces slightly. A fair bit of fizz creating a nice frothy head and a nice bit of lacing.

Aroma: Sweet caramel, with a hint of citrus and pine.

Flavour: A cracking combo of sweet honey that works swimmingly with its dry slightly bitter pine finish.

Well balanced and uber refreshing too!
