We went up to Wolverhampton, home to the legendary Bank’s Brewery and famous mid-1800’s pub, The Great Western. But for a city steeped in brewing history, there is also a very forward thinking, dare we say it “craftier” side that is making this great city more and more exciting by the day when it comes to beer. Despite plenty of potential stop-offs, this trip had a very specific destination, a place that claims to be the ONLY craft beer bottle shop in Wolvo, which is quite surprising in comparison to the surrounding breweries and cracking pubs.
It’s called The Wine Seller and is based in Compton, a nice little nice suburb of the city. We were greeted by Pal who owns the place. From the front of the store it looks like your standard off-license, but he then led us around the corner to the end of the store where we were greeted by what can only be described as a heavenly line up of craft beer… and we mean, it was EPIC!!!
The store itself has been going for nearly 10 years now and Pal explained to us that ironically it was actually through a series of unfortunate events, followed by one fortunate event that this fantastic line-up came into existence. The back end of the store used to be for DVD rentals… we all know how that one ended! Then in 2013, Pal discovered CRAFT BEER!
“I started coming across more interesting beers, drinking them and paying more attention to what was available to me. I fell in love with certain beers and figured that I need to share the love!’
The collection gradually grew to what it is now in the 1000+ region and Pal is finding more and more people visiting from far and wide to view and purchase some editions of his amazing collection.
“The biggest challenge has been competing with the supermarkets price-wise but our variety and diversity in beer beats them hands down.”
We then cracked opened Pal’s favourite brew (at the moment)… Yellow Belly, Buxton Brewery’s collaboration Omnipollo. An Imperial Stout brew with plenty of depth, peanut butter & biscuity flavour. VERY nice but at 10% a bit of a sharer.
The Wine Seller is now planning tasting events and even A TAP in the New Year. So if you’re near by, come down and check this great store out, Pal will be on hand to advise on what’s a good pick or for just a chat about good beer!
